Competition Repertoire
Contestants must perform three pieces from memory, one from each category (A, B, and C), choosing from the requirements listed below. The total performance length of all three pieces, including pauses between pieces, must not exceed the time limit for each division.
When not specified, contestants may choose any edition of a piece listed.
Contestants are encouraged to choose a program that is varied in style and tempo.
All repeats are optional.
New Artist Division
ages 11-14 on July 8, 2010; time limit 15 minutes
(A) Choose one of the following:
- "Chaconne" by Durand
- any Dussek Sonatina (both movements)
- any one movement from a Naderman Sonata (including introductions, where applicable)
- any one movement from "Sonata in D Major" by Parry
- "Passacaille" by Handel (transcribed by Tiny Beon)
(B) Choose one of the following:
- any two dances from the "Suite of Eight Dances" by Salzedo
- "Nocturne" by Glinka
- "Watching the Wheat" by Thomas
- "La Desirade" from Method for the Harp by Lawrence/Salzedo
- "Automne" by Grandjany
(C) Free choice of the contestant’s choosing
Free choice selections should be taken from the standard solo classical harp repertoire (i.e., no pop or jazz) and should be of equal or greater difficulty than the pieces listed above. Only one work may be chosen in the free choice category; however, one or more movements of a multi-movement work may be performed, provided the movements are from the same work. Free choice selections must be for solo harp: do no choose a piece that requires accompaniment.
Emerging Artist Division
ages 11-19 on July 8, 2010; time limit 20 minutes
(A) Choose one of the following:
- "Prelude" by Prokofiev
- "Theme and Variations" by Handel
- "Allegro" (first movement) from Sonata in C minor by Pescetti
- "King's Hunt" by Bull (from Music for Harp arranged by Grandjany)
- any sonata by Scarlatti (any edition)
(B) Choose one of the following:
- "La Source" by Hasselmans
- "First Arabesque" by Debussy (any edition)
- "Absidioles" by Andres
- Etude de Concert "Au Matin" by Tournier
- Any one selection from the Modern Study of the Harp by Salzedo
(C) Free choice of the contestant’s choosing
